KERALA , “God’s Own Country”

I did not want this post to be an academic or wiki like work. I just wanted to write my observations on a piece of geography called Kerala and more so about its culture. A place I call my birth place and there by making me a keralite or Malayali!(one who speak the local language, Malayalam) or Mallu

Mallu (slang for a malayali)

This piece, as I mentioned before, is directed towards those non malayalis who follow my blog. I am also aware that any mallu (slang for malayali) worth his/her salt ,will dispute everything that is written in this post. An average Malayali prides him/her self in fighting on every morsel of information and have their own opinion on everything and all too willing to fight over/for it.

Non malayali Indians, consider mallus different (a mixed bag) This label is worn like a badge of honor by the Mallus mostly as they feel the state stands out (good and bad) from rest of the country. A malayali is a complex person though most think they are not. Their self perception is very convoluted.

Kerala

Kerala is a state in southwestern part of India. It is in a tropical paradise. If you are a travel connoisseur, Kerala should be on your short list, if not your ultimate bucket list. It boast of the Malabar coast, world famous for its spices. English is spoken and understood even in the remote part of the state. The literacy rate is 93%. It is relatively a safe place for tourists. Transportation is well established and cheap.. You have multiple airports to fly directly in from anywhere in the world. Electronic communication is the norm for daily life. It has a very diverse demographics and enjoy religious harmony. Food is amazing, just don’t eat uncooked food or drink un bottled water outside. The water/food in people’s houses are generally safe..People are generally responsive and friendly.

Gods own county”

People, mainly the natives, have proudly used the term “God’s own county” which is not an original usage.
God’s Own Country, is a phrase that was first used to describe the Wicklow Mountains (Ireland) and has subsequently been used to refer to several places in the world including Surrey, Australia, United States, New Zealand, Yorkshire,Cornwall, Scotland and Wales. Basically the people want to claim it to be like a paradise.

Kerala fits that label at least its landscapes and beauty.

See for yourself!
