Trip to Mexico
I had a list, a list of places in the world where I wanted to retire to. Mexico was the first and I started my quest with my trip to Mexico.
I narrowed the places to
SMA -San Miguel DE Allende
San Miguel De Allende is a city in Mexico’s central highlands at an elevation of over 6000 ft. It is a colonial era town that is known for it’s well preserved baroque Spanish architecture. It is highlighted by a large Expat community that enjoys the economic benefits, thriving arts scene and cultural festivals. The city center has cobble stoned roads .
As beautiful it might be SMA might be a decade past my check list as it is over crowded and expensive. It still remains in my list as a maybe
Delores Hidalgo
I ran into an older couple in SMA. They live in Delores which is another city in the central highlands ,an hour by bus from SMA. The couple enticed me to take a look as they felt SMA has outgrown its charm due to growth and tourism. It is what SMA was 20 years ago. The couple has an organic farm and the man has an art gallery.
Dolores Hidalgo prides in its history as the birthplace of Mexican independence in the 1800s. Local priest Miguel Hidalgo uttered the “Cry of Dolores” at the 18th-century Dolores Parish Church, rallying people to rise up.
I got on the bus , very comfortable and luxurious a/c bus and took a look se.
This quaint town did not disappointment me. A maybe for the future.
Guanajuato
I took a bus ride through the central mountains from SMA to the arguably the most beautiful city in Mexico. You arrive at the bus station which is outside the city center and have to take a cab. The city is amazing. It is beautiful and radiating with ambiance and life. I found it a bit claustrophobic for my taste due to the crisscrossing tunnels.
So I would love to spend some time there periodically, I would not want to retire there
Other places visited on this trip
Leon and Guadalajara These were two cities for flight in and out. Two cities not on the list for retirement
There are a few more cities in Mexico I will explore for retirement. Mexico is a wonderful country with its kind people, rich heritage, food, music and cost of living much less than the USA.
